Hello

My name is Gene Nadeau

Gene Nadeau is a queer Asian-American sculptor creating sets and environments to frame their sculptures in a whimsical way. In their work, Gene explores themes of queerness and racial identity. Gene has graduated with their BFA in studio art from University of Central Florida and previously studied illustration at Ringling College of Art and Design. Gene plans to use the skills they've learned to enter the field of scenic design as well as ceramics.

Artist Statement

As a queer Indonesian-American, I create 3-dimensional art that explores my experiences in a way that helps myself and others understand my identity. I grew up in a Catholic school with only three other Indonesian children, one of whom was my sister. Through art, I have learned how to love and celebrate these parts of my life and see them as more than isolating experiences. I create sculptures and scenarios that exist in the same physical space as the viewer, allowing viewers to confront these objects and ideas. I want viewers to question whether or not the way I identify is at odds with the way American society views the world.
